Extra Judicial Sanctions is a type of diversion program that allows young people to accept responsibility for their actions and to make amends to the victim and/or community by completing certain tasks (sanctions) without having to proceed through the formal court process. Community Justice Workers can also help young people and their families in making referrals to other community services. To be accepted into this program, youth must be given an opportunity to consult with a lawyer; must accept responsibility for their offending behaviour; and must be informed of the sanction(s) and consent to participate in the program.
